Last night, I was on the computer (of course) and Tommy was headed for bed when we noticed something flying around our living room. Tommy said "Jodie, we have a bird in the house." I was surprised but able to keep a somewhat level head and we closed the doors to all the rooms and were questioning how the bird could have gotten in the house when we realized it was not a bird, or a plane, but a BAT!!!! I completely freaked out and ran to our bedroom to let Tommy deal with the situation. I have always thought I am a pretty level headed person who can think on my feet if I need to and at that point in time, my feet were telling me to run so that is what I did!!! Of course, this left my poor husband to deal with the situation- great wife I am!!
He just kept saying, "How do I get this thing out of the house!" I responded, with my head sticking very carefully around our bedroom door, "I have not idea!" The bat just kept flying in circles around the living room and every time it would swoop by Tommy, he would sort of jump back- I felt like I should have been more help but come on- there was BAT in the living room!
So eventually I remember that this has happened to a girl I know and she said that they turned all the lights on in the house to try to get the bat out. I poke my head out to tell Tommy to turn all the lights on in the kitchen and living room and it is completely dark. He had turned them all off to try to get the bat to fly outside. Now I don't really know which one of us is right at this point but I am yelling at him that bats like the dark so turn on the lights so it will fly outside. He has the front door propped open and the outside light on. He finally gives in to my "suggestions" and turns on all the lights and turns off the front porch light but leaves the door open. So now we have a really clear view of this lovely bat flying around our living room, still in circles, with Tommy bobbing back every time it gets close to him and me still just sticking my head out of the door to check on how he is doing.
I asked him if he wanted a towel, to do what with I had no clue, but I felt that I should try to be a little more helpful! His reply "Um yeah I would like something!" So I gave him a towel and he decided that the most helpful thing to do would be to try to knock it down with the towel and try to get it out of the door. The more he tried to hit it, the madder he got because he kept missing. After about 2 or so minutes of nonstop misses, I hear "Ok It's down and now I don't know what to do. Ok and now it is out" and I hear running and the door being slammed shut!! I walked out and we both look at each other and shiver saying "how did that thing get in the house!" There was not an open window or door in the house and the attic fan was closed so we figure it was "sleeping" in our house for who knows how long and then once we started to turn off the lights, he woke up for a night out!!!!
Tommy told me later that he was thinking the whole time he was trying to hit the bat, that it should have been much easier, like hitting a baseball. Then he remembered that this thing was THINKING unlike a baseball!! I laughed and told him he was very brave and my hero!! He said only because he was here. He told me that he figures if he was gone, Bobby or Brandon would have been my hero. Ok so he is probably right about that one but he WAS here so he gets the title this time!
So here we are this morning, me still really creeped out and him off at work. Nora slept through the whole thing so she has no idea of the uninvited guest that showed up at our house last night! I am off to wash a towel and clean my house to try to get rid of that bat "feeling."

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! I would have FREAKED out! I hate bats! Good thing Nora stayed to sleep and WOW Tom is a hero, he must work out! :)
That's horrible! Good thing your HERO was home and you weren't alone. I can't imagine how I would have reacted...it's bad enough when I have a wasp in the car!
WOW! Gross! I am SO glad he was home. I would have locked all of us in a room and hid. I wish I could say I did well in emergencies, but I don't. Glad it is out!!!!
All I have to say is... it was funny to her you tell the story last night on the phone but it was just as funny as reading it. Jo, you may be the next JK Rowling! By the way, I am reading all night tonight!
Leave it to Tommy to compare trapping a bat to baseball :) I am glad everything turned out well. I would have probably freaked out and dialed 911.
That sounds scary! I remember someone saying that same thing happened to them and later they found out that bats can be dangerous and carry diseases like rabies. Yikes! This also happened to another girl, and if I remember right, they called the fire dpt and they took care of it, and apparently they do it often!? So crazy!
I would have absolutely gone CRAZY! You two are pretty calm, it sounds like. One time I called Dave Harris at 11pm to come over and kill a spider (Brett was at the hospital) - how pathetic is that?! =)
That is so funny!... Of course, it wouldn't be funny if Tommy hadn't been there. A thinking baseball... that's beautiful.
Jodie- The same thing happened to us! We just started to watch a movie one night and the bat flew into our tv screen. We got the fly swatters out and it took us about ten minutes to swat it out of our house. We have no idea how it got in... our windows had been open, so it must have snuck in through one of them. They can sneak in a quarter of an inch space! I'm glad you got it out though!
