I feel so Wicked!!!

So on Sunday night, Tommy and I went to see WICKED!!!!! It was so amazing I could not believe it. Tommy has been teasing me since the show was over that I did not sit back in my seat until the middle of the 2nd act- I was like a kid at Christmas!! We went to see it at the FOX in St. Louis which is an awesome experience in and of itself. If you have never been to the FOX theater, you should find a way to go because the architecture is amazing and so beautiful. It is a building full of so much history you feel it when you walk in the front doors.
I have seen a number of shows at the FOX and they have all been wonderful. The groups that perform there are very high scale- I have never been disappointed and WICKED was no disappointment at all!

I was very interested to see how the musical differed from the book. The book, in my opinion was fairly dark with a lot of deep issues like government, death and right and wrong. I was curious how the musical, which has been so popular with families and young girls would compare to the book, which I enjoyed a lot. I have to say that I was completely and totally surprise and impressed with the story line they created and how true to the book it stayed. The main important elements and characters were all included and even though the musical story line is very different from the book, they still had a lot of commonalities.

The musical was very funny!!! We spent a lot of time laughing out loud as did the rest of the audience too. There was a lightness to the story but if you really listened to the words of the songs the ideas of the book were in there. The musical had a lot of emotion to it that the songs enhanced. There were a couple of songs that really stood out to me such as "Popular" which Galinda sings to Elphaba in their dorm room at school and "For Good" which Elphaba and Glinda sing to each other at the end of the musical. Both songs are so different from each other but both have wonderful lyrics and beautiful music. "Popular" is a very funny song - "La La La La We're gonna make you popular. Flirt, flounce, everything that counts. What shoes to wear, how to fix your hair, the right cohorts, good at sports. The proper plays and how to talk to boys just like ME!!" while "For Good" is a heartfelt song about change- "Because I knew you... I have been changed for Good." (Those of you who will be at senior banquet will most likely hear this song ;) . I loved all the songs and am planning on buying the CD as soon as I can!!!!

The costumes were phenomenal as well!!! Everything was so big and colorful. The costumes shined and glimmered under all the lights and you really could not take your eyes off of them. I think that they were some of the best costumes I have seen because they added so much color and emotion to the entire set. The stage was never a specific place in that there was not a specific set. Every time there was a new scene, things would roll in and out to make a set against a backdrop but it was never a closed room or building. There was constant movement going on which helped to keep things flowing and held your attention at all times. It was pretty amazing how things flowed into the next and you did not think twice about anything looking out of place because it looked so natural as it was.

I made Tommy buy me a program and I am so glad I did because it was the only way to see what the costumes and stage looked like since cameras were not allowed at all. The photos in the program show pictures from the Broadway, Chicago and LA shows and they are all almost exactly like the ones we saw- what a great keepsake!! I will be happy show it to anyone who wants to see it!! I tried to take pictures but there is a glare because of the paper it is on.

I could really go on and on about it and tell the whole story but I don't want to ruin it for anyone else who might go see it. There were quite a few surprises for me and I would hate to have known going into it what was going to happen. However, if anyone would like me too explain it all in another post, I would be happy to share but I don't want anyone to be surprised.

I am so happy that I got to have this fantastic experience. I think I would have to rate this in my top five experiences of all time! It left such an impression on me. There was no one particular thing about it that impressed me. It was everything about it that impressed me. I hope that someday, everyone has a chance to see this musical. It is well worth the money because it is so entertaining. I would totally go again so if anyone ever has an extra ticket, let me know- I am there!!!! It was totally WICKED!!!!
