Oh so Grand!!!

WARNING: LOTS OF PICTURES IN THIS POST!!!!!

We just got back from a trip to Flagstaff, AZ to visit my newly married sister and her hubby! We had so much fun!! Flagstaff is a great place because it is not too far away from all the really big stuff. It is 2 hours from Phoenix (where the airport is), 45 minutes from the Grand Canyon, and 30 minutes from Sedona. We did a lot of fun shopping and spending time together. This post is mostly of pictures because it was just too beautiful there. I loved all the colors that you saw everywhere you looked.

We went to the Grand Canyon on Sunday. I have always heard how great this place is but you don't really understand how amazing it is until you are standing there looking out over it. It is HUGE!! I was in total awe of what nature is and can do. I know that my pictures don't do it any justice but I have to share them because it is just amazing. These pictures are from the East Rim Desert View at various locations along our trial walk.

This picture shows the trail that you take for the tours into the Grand Canyon on donkeys!! Brave people- I don't think I could do it!! It is hard to see but it is the zigzag down the middle of the picture.

Here is out whole group- we missed you Tommy!! L-R Me, Grandma Eichhorn, Mom, Dad, Nora, Jill and Nick.

We also went to the Grand Canyon Desert View Watchtower and saw the widest possible view of the Grand Canyon. It was amazing and I just could not believe again how incredible mother nature is. This was the best view we had of the Colorado River. Nora kept saying the the "river is not working 'cause I can't see it flowing." Smart kiddo huh! Inside the tower, there were 5 floors with spiral stairs all the way up. On the walls, floors and every flat surface possible, there were Hopi Tribe drawings and murals done by Hopi Tribes people. The art was amazing and very detailed.

On our way home from the Grand Canyon, we drove through the Painted Desert. For some reason, I don't have any pictures of any of the painted desert but I can tell you that it was beautiful. It is named for it's brightly colored landscapes. The colors was amazing and we were driving through as the sun was beginning to go down. Too bad I was really tired and dealing with my kiddo- those would have been great pictures!

On Tuesday, we went to a great town called Sedona. To get there from Flagstaff, you literally have to drive down the side of a mountain! You have to take your time because as you are going down, you are right at the edge of the cliff and if you drive to far over to the right, you will drive right off the mountain. There are some guard rails up but not in all the places. Sedona is 30 minutes from Flagstaff but it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to drive there due to the dangerous road!!!
It is a beautiful drive but I was not able to get too many pictures because of the trees and such. Still, it was an amazing drive.Sedona is a great town with a strip of shopping in the middle. We had so much fun there. We spent the whole day shopping and exploring.

This pink jeep was one that they gave tours in. We did not take the tour- too expensive- but Nora liked pretending to drive around. Pink is a good color for her!

One our way back to Flagstaff, we took a different route home and drove by Chapel Rock. It sits 200 feet up from the road, built between two red rock formations. It was designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was incredible!

The rest of the week was spent eating, shopping and hanging out at Jill and Nick's cute apartment. Jill is an interior designer so you can imagine how great things look even though they can't paint the walls or change the carpet. Nora had a lot of fun with their dog, Boozer. By the end of the trip, they were great buddies.

Thanks Jill and Nick for letting us stay with you. It was a great trip!!!!!!

Just a little side note, while I working on this post, Nora was looking at the pictures and said, "Mommy, what was that place we went to with LaLa and Uncle Nick (her name for my sister) with all those big holes?" I am pretty sure that she meant the Grand Canyon. Pretty funny how kids remember things!!

HOW FUN! I spent 2 weeks in Flagstaff and have been to Sedona as well. I love that Flagstaff has more mild weather than Phoenix too! I thought I was going to DIE when I went there, but was SO pleasantly surprised!! It reminded me a lot of Utah actually. Great pictures! It brought back so many memories! Thanks! Glad you had a great trip!!!!!

Jodie, I really like Flagstaff, too. It's south enough for me, but they still have snow. Glad you had fun - the pictures are great!!
